The doc will be directed by Jason Hehir, who's directed four 30 for 30 films, including the ones about Michigan's Fab Five and the 1986 Chicago Bulls.
"For more than 20 years, Andre the Giant's larger than life personality and unique charisma captured the imagination of fans around the world".
"The Eighth Wonder of the World" Andre the Giant is getting his own HBO documentary ... and it'll be produced by 30 for 30 creator Bill Simmons.
"He's a true legend", Simmons said. While the project had been festering in the undercurrent ever since, Monday's announcement indicates HBO and WWE finally got the minor details of the project sorted out.
From the late 1960s through the mid-1980s, Andre Rene Rousimoff was the highest paid professional wrestler in the business and he knew how to spend his cash and time. A film centered on Andre the Giant has always been in the works and seems a fitting first doc foray for Simmons post-ESPN.
Bill Simmons, the founder and CEO of The Ringer, announced his next HBO project after his show Any Given Wednesday was canceled midseason. "Going back to 2007 and 2008 when I was creating and developing "30 for 30" for ESPN, Andre's story rode the top of every single sports documentary wish list I ever made", said Simmons.
HBO did not announce an air date for the film.
If you are a fan of wrestling, especially a fan of when the WWE was called the WWF then you were undoubtedly a fan of Andre the Giant. P.S. this isn't the only Andre the Giant biopic in the works right now.
According to the latest WWE news from City Pages, Roberts - who is now doing very well, certainly much better than he was doing when he was at the beginning of his own documentary - told a amusing story of his own about Andre the Giant. "Andre just says in his big thick accent, 'I'm... farting'".
