She will not be able to contest elections for 10 years or hold public office.
Following her meeting with Tamil Nadu caretaker Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, Jayalalithaa's niece Deepa Jayakumar Tuesday said that she is ready to work with Panneerselvam in the future. "The people of Tamil Nadu will never accept this", said Mr Panneerselvam. The apex court, on June 7 past year, had reserved its verdict on a batch of appeals filed by Karnataka government and others against the high court order acquitting then Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa and others in the assets case after hearing a battery of lawyers from both sides.
What was the case against Sasikala?
She was accused of having wealth of Rs.64 crore more than declared sources of income during 1991 to 1996 when J Jayalalithaa was the chief minister. She is doing the same now also.
As pert the latest news, Sasikala has been convicted on the grounds of corruption by The Supreme court.
The opposition hailed the Supreme Court verdict too.
School education minister K. Pandiarajan along with 10 MLAs from Panneerselvam's, camp reached the Golden Bay resort on the outskirts of Chennai where Sasikala and the MLAs who support her have been staying. Then both politicians began the arduous task of cobbling together the support of at least 117 of the AIADMK's 134 legislators, to provide the required majority to be chief minister of the 234-seat assembly. Now, nine MLAs are backing OPS. She was handed down a two-year jail term.
However, after her death on December 5, 2016, there was a vacuum at the top in the absence of a second-rung leadership.
June 4, 1997- Chargesheet filed against Jayalalithaa, Sasikala, Ilavarasi and Sudhakaran in the disproportionate assets case. No attempt was made by the counsel seeking to sustain the high court judgment of acquittal. Her appointment is challenged due to her conviction in October, 2000 in the TANSI (Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation) case. The conviction was handed down by a Special Court in Bangalore in September 2014. Jayalalithaa ceases to be CM. This puts end to her dreams of turning CM.
November 18, 2003 - The SC transfers the case to Bengaluru.
October/November 2011: Jayalalithaa deposes in the Special Court and answers 1,339 questions. From their the three convicts are expected to be lodged at the Parappana Agrahara Prison complex in Bangalore around 2.30 PM today.
While Jayalalithaa was represented by senior advocate L Nageswara Rao, now a Supreme Court judge, in the hearing of the appeal, another senior lawyer Shekhar Naphade represented other accused in the case.
The bench said since Jayalalithaa has expired, the proceeding against her is abated. "I feel so satisfied that despite facing troubles, the MLAs are supporting me", Ms Sasikala said today, before heading for the Poes Garden residence of J Jayalalithaa. Since this is a most important day in Tamilnadu Politics, all eyes are on Supreme Court Judgement on Sasikala.
