Ravichandran Ashwin Becomes Fastest Bowler To Claim 250 Wickets

The previous most wickets by a spinner in 45 Tests were 218 by Muttiah Muralitharan. Ashwin took 37 Tests to reach the milestone to break the record previously held by Pakistan's Waqar Younis who achieved it in 38 Tests.

India need seven wickets on Monday to win the one-off Test with Bangladesh after Ravichandran Ashwin claimed a record-breaking 250th wicket.

Anil Kumble is 12th on the list and is the second Indian bowler in the top-20 with 250 or more wickets in Tests.

Indian spin maestro Ravichandran Ashwin became the fastest bowler in Test cricket to scalp 250 wickets.

Ashwin's impact for India in 2016 was astounding and the figures from the last five series say it all. He dominated each series he played in, and took an astonishing 55 wickets in eight home Tests, which meant that India broke their previous record for longest unbeaten streak. Ashwin had a stellar 2016 season with the ball and was instrumental in making team India the No.1 Test team.

Ashwin's 249th wicket was the all-important one of Shakib Al Hasan in the one-off Test against Bangladesh in Hyderabad. Number of matches by other India bowlers: Bishen Bedi (60 matches), Harbhajan Singh (61), Kapil Dev (65) and Zaheer Khan (73).

Rahim led Bangladesh's resistance for almost three sessions with his patient 127 before becoming the 250th Test victim of the 30-year-old Ashwin who surpassed Australia paceman Dennis Lillee's record.
