Betsy DeVos prompted outrage after marking her first day on the job with a tweet Wednesday, writing: 'Day 1 on the job is done, but we're only getting started.
President Trump's new Secretary of Education probably won't change the way local school districts do business, says the superintendent of Eagle County Schools. Good luck with your incompetence'.
Kansas Senators Jerry Moran and Pat Roberts voted to confirm DeVos.
"She doesn't represent anything that they stand for", one protester said.
Another protester accused her of buying her nomination, saying, "She's giving money to senators and buying your way to position". "You should be so proud of yourself!". The same man yelled "Shame".
A group of adamant protesters on Friday did what Democrats failed to do: Block Betsy DeVos. She eventually managed to enter Jefferson Academy in SW, D.C. Yeah, that's the way to improve public education in this country.
"Yes, and it would have been her first time ever in a public school", Franken said, in an apparent swipe at DeVos for her critical stance on the public education system.
"I respect peaceful protest, and I will not be deterred in executing the vital mission of the Department of Education", she said.
"DC has the fastest growing urban school district in America".
Some waved Black Lives Matter placards, but the protest was organized by the Washington Teachers-Union and its parent union, American Federation of Teachers. In advocating school choice, the editorial might as well have sung Ms. DeVos's praises.
One person was arrested, video from the scene showed.
On Friday, protesters held signs that called for the protection of public schools.
DeVos' visit to the school was not announced by the Education Department. "The debate around her nomination has been a healthy exercise of our democracy, made all the more important because it involves our most precious possession, our children".
DeVos has been active in Michigan's Republican Party as an activist and fundraiser.
