The 41-year-old Silva is certainly on the short list of all-time great MMA fighters. Since then, he lost twice to Long Island's Chris Weidman in 2013 (including a broken leg in the rematch), had a win over Nick Diaz changed into a no contest after a positive drug test in 2015, lost to Michael Bisping last February, then lost to Daniel Cormier at UFC 200 last July in a fight he accepted on three days' notice against the light heavyweight champion.
While the co-main events saw Germaine de Randamie and Anderson Silva handed unanimous decision victories, Performance of the Night honours went to Silva's compatriot Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza for the evening's sole submission win.
Brunson attempted nine takedowns through the three-round fight and Silva was able to stuff seven of them. While Silva tried to initiate action on the feet in the third and final frame, Brunson wanted no part of it, instead opting to close the distance and tie "The Spider" up. Silva began to stalk Brunson in Round 2 as the power puncher remained tentative, landing some solid offense after dancing around the cage. He was able to withstand flurries from Brunson while in the clinch.
While waiting for the judges score cards, Brunson and Silva sat on the mat, sharing some words, before standing up, both men raising their hands triumphantly in the air.
Silva was incredibly emotional after the fight, breaking down immediately after his name was announced. "For a long time it was my dream to fight in NY", he added. "I just put in my heart the whole time", Silva said. "Now I just come to fight happy because I love my job, I love UFC, I love my fans".
I'll say it every time Silva fights: he should retire.
"When I come inside the cage, all my life is inside the cage".
