Tamil Nadu in chaos after chief minister's revolt

Mr Panneerselvam told reporters that he was not "convinced of the decision" taken by this group, but "by then they had collected the signatures of the legislators" in favour of Sasikala, a close confidante of Jayalalitha.

State education minister K. Pandiarajan extended support to Panneerselvam Saturday and it is considered to be OPS camp's biggest catch so far as Pandiarajan was branded a Sasikala loyalist. A doctor close to Sasikala is said to have administered the wrong medicine to Jayalalithaa. The development comes amid Ms. Sasikala is huddled up with MLAs at the Golden Bay Resorts in Kuvathur.

AIADMK leaders retaliated, however, that Panneerselvam is an opportunist and a liar who did not have the backing of lawmakers.

While Panneerselvam has declared he could prove majority on the floor of the House, Sasikala said she can be sworn-in as CM since she enjoys majority in the AIADMK Legislature Party.

The incident showed that senior officials don't report to the caretaker chief minister but to Sasikala even though she is only the CM-in-waiting.

The chief minister of India's Tamil Nadu state on Wednesday refused to give way to his anointed successor, threatening to plunge the prosperous southern region into chaos months after the death of its popular leader.

"To protect AIADMK, everybody should join hands with OPS (Panneerselvam)", he had said. He also predicted that more leaders will switch sides.

Ponnaiyan, who led the party's regular briefing about late chief minister Jayalalithaa's health status during her 75 days of hospitalisation, said Panneerselvam is giving "good governance.free of corruption", winning laurels for his work from the people. Benjamin represents the Maduravoyal constituency in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. "We have also sent a message to Panneerselvam requesting him to stand his ground for a few more days".

In this situation, there is no way the governor can ascertain their wishes of the MLAs unless he directs the police to go and talk to them.

She also sought an appointment with him to show the MLAs supporting her.
