Harith Iskander crowned 'Funniest Person in the World' after winning comedy contest

"When I started my career 26 years ago, my goal was to unite Malaysians through comedy and today, I can unite the world with my brand of Malaysian humour", said newly-minted world's funniest person Harith Iskander.

"I'm thrilled to be declared the victor of the competition". At the moment, I haven't really gathered my thoughts.

The stand-up comedy king said he was glad to be able to wave the Malaysian flag on an global platform, adding that it was about time for him to put Malaysian comedy on the world map.

Harith was also grateful to both his fans and the media for giving their full support.

According to The Star Online, Harith will receive the grand prize of US$100,000 (RM416,000) as the victor of the title.

Second place Calleja took home US$10,000 (RM44,484) while Vrana bagged US$5,000 (RM22,242) for coming in third. The competition is organised by Laugh Factory, a global comedy chain in the United States, which has seen a number of big names pass through its doors, including Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle and Jay Leno.

The finals of the competition was held at the Hullu Polo Arena on Thursday. The victor was then chosen through an online vote, which was open until 3 p.m. on Saturday (Manila time).

In the initial stages of the competition, Harith had to defeat 88 other comedians worldwide, including another Malaysian representative, Dr Jason Leong.
