This team has a legitimate shot - Big Ten East or not, MI or not, Ohio State or not - of competing for the College Football Playoff again next year.
Wisconsin, meanwhile, is most likely not heading to the playoff or to the Rose Bowl - which will feature the highest-ranked Big Ten team that does not make the playoff.
Ohio State has three victories against top-10 teams, including road wins against Wisconsin and Oklahoma.
Before this weekend's games, the CFP rankings were: No. 1 Alabama, No. 2.
The one difference from last week's top four and the final one was Clemson and Ohio State switched spots.
Penn State capped off an unbelievable season by rallying from a 21-point deficit to beat Wisconsin 38-31 in the Big Ten Championship game on Saturday night. It was the largest comeback in the six-year history of the game. "So ... coming out this morning, Washington deserved that No. 4 spot, and the selection committee believes they're a better football team when compared to Penn State".
"I think with the time we have", Barrett said, "we're going to be in a good place". "We've won nine straight". We overcame early setbacks. "It's on you, now, the committee!" The Nittany Lions went undefeated in 1994.
No. 2 Ohio State is making its second playoff appearance and No. 3 Clemson (12-1) is in for the second consecutive season. Both had few elite wins: PSU over Ohio State and Wisconsin; Michigan over Wisconsin, Penn State, and Colorado.
What if the Sooners had substituted Portland State for Houston or Rutgers for Ohio State? "I didn't hold up that sign".
"Coach said what he needed to say, I'm going to enjoy this moment with my teammates", McSorley said before leaving the stage on the field. It's certainly worth tuning in as a fan to let all of it soak in.
McSorley finished 22 of 31 for 384 passing yards and four touchdowns, while Blacknall caught six of those passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns.
Clement ran 67 yards for a touchdown with 3:06 to go in the first quarter, pushing Wisconsin to a 14-0 lead.
And McSorley wasn't the only one putting on a show. "Obviously winning the Big Ten championship and winning a game head-to-head, we felt that gave us a lot of value". He completes 68 percent of his passes and has thrown for 2,633 yards with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
What was most impressive was how they won it.
Penn State's performance was enough to win Saturday. The Nittany Lions should be proud to be a part of it again.
However, as you have probably guessed if you didn't already know, Penn State did win the Big Ten.
There are a lot of potential turning points that can be pointed to during this awesome season.
And it was Penn State that finished first, jumping ahead of MI to check in at No. 5 in the final rankings. After all, Penn State just won the Big Ten Championship. Three wins over playoff top-10 teams, including what possibly will be defined as the game of the year, the victory they had over MI.
On Saturday, Penn State showed why it has been the most risky second-half team in the country.
