During the Broncos' 27-9 win over Houston Monday, Denver starting running back C.J. Anderson injured his right knee during an 11-yard run on the final play of the first quarter.
The loss of Anderson is a blow to the Broncos' running game, which came alive Monday night with 190 yards and two rushing touchdowns. The Broncos matched an $18 million offer sheet to Anderson from the Miami Dolphinsthis offseason. The front-loaded contract paid him $6 million this year.
Anderson leads the Broncos with 437 yards and four rushing touchdowns on 110 carries.
He did it despite hurting his right knee on his second carry. He deserves to be around. Whether or not Anderson is ready to play by then remains to be seen.
Anderson was set for an arthroscopic procedure Thursday, according to Rapoport.
"I know I can handle it", Booker said. "I feel like everybody has to battle some type of injury throughout their career and overcome it, and C.J., he'll do that".
Booker has already begun proving his pro worthiness as a runner; he has 129 yards in the last two games and has averaged 5.8 yards per carry in that span.
The Denver Broncos' running back position is one that has seemingly always bred success, even without the Kubiak/Shanahan offense installed.
"We think he has a chance to help us really quickly", Kubiak said. We're just growing as a group.
His 107-yard performance on 16 carries marked his first career 100-yard game before Halloween. But Anderson was in pain when he arrived at the team's facility Tuesday, so a second exam was scheduled.
But that does not necessarily mean that the newest Bronco will be in the lineup Sunday.
Kapri Bibbs will be the primary backup to Devontae Booker, and both guys will get significant opportunities on Sunday against San Diego to prove that they can hold down the fort in Anderson's absence. Kapri Bibbs will back him up. "I think he understands what we have to go do and just keep our fingers crossed on the other end".
He underwent surgery to fix a torn meniscus in his knee Thursday, and on Friday the Broncos placed him on injured reserve. "But everything that he does he's gotten better at it and worked extremely hard".
