Their bodies were never found.
Andy Evans, Ade Shannon and Sean Marley are producing for Wales-based outfit Mad as Birds with Alan Siegel for G-BASE, Brian Oliver for Cross Creek and star Butler.
Peter Mullan (Tyrannosaur, Trainspotting) and rising star Joe Alwyn (Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, The Sense of an Ending) have signed on to appear in the psychological thriller Keepers, from director Kristoffer Nyholm (The Enfield Haunting, Taboo).
Although the island had been battered by the wind and waves, the oil-fired lamps were clean and refilled, with the men's beds unmade.
It says: "As Thomas (Mullan), James (Butler) and Donald (Alwyn) settle into their usual, solitary routines, something unexpected and potentially life-changing occurs- they stumble upon something that isn't theirs to keep". Where did it come from? Who does it belong to?
But the new take on the story will pit the three men against each other in a "tense battle for survival".
Nyholm, whose TV credits include the classic first series of The Killing from Denmark's DR, hit United Kingdom miniseries The Enfield Haunting and upcoming period adventure Taboo starring Tom Hardy for FX and BBC, will direct Keepers from a script by BAFTA Cymru Nominated screenwriter Celyn Jones (co-writer and star of Set Fire to the Stars) and actor/writer Joe Bone (Castles in the Sky).
Nyholm calls the film, "a journey from innocence to animalistic survival".
Gerard Butler keeps it cool and casual as he steps out of a auto to make his way inside LAX Airport to catch a flight out of town on Sunday (October 30) in Los Angeles.
Renowned casting director Reg Poerscout-Edgerton wears the co-producer's hat for this one, as well as being on casting duties.
"Keepers has all the shock and awe life can offer, wrapped up in a film that we hope will cling to its audience well after the last reel stops turning in the cinema".
Protagonist CEO Mike Goodridge added: "This project has been close to our hearts for a couple of years now, so it's exciting to see it come together with such a flawless cast".
Cross Creek Pictures is fully financing Keepers, a psychological thriller to be helmed by The Killing's Kristoffer Nyholm in his feature debut.
