Texas fans roast Charlie Strong after loss to Oklahoma

Wide receiver Dede Westbrook sprinted toward the south end of the Cotton Bowl with the ball in his hands and Longhorn defenders behind him.

Westbrook combined with Samaje Perine to give the Sooners their first ever 200 yard rushing performance and 200 yard receiving performance in the same game in school history. Mayfield came up with a good answer, like he did so many times Saturday in a 45-40 win over Texas.

The critical point in the game came late in the third quarter. We just let [Westbrook] run free.

We know this much: Strong has no one else to demote.

"It wasn't a fact of overlooking them, it was just not playing with our mentality, the mentality that we need to carry on every week", Mayfield said.

According to Oklahoma's official Twitter account, Mayfield's strike to Westbrook was the longest touchdown in Red River Rivalry history. Two of their first three drives ended in interceptions - the Longhorns' first two interceptions of the season.

Oklahoma immediately responded to the Texas turnover by marching 93 yards in a little over six minutes for what turned out to be the deciding touchdown and a 45-27 advantage with just under 12 minutes remaining in the game. Haines set up the first score of the day - a 33-yard field goal by Trent Domingue - on his second interception of Baker Mayfield, a relatively-easy catch that was returned 38 yards to the Oklahoma 13. At that point, Texas had to scramble to try to keep pace as its defense struggled to contain an offense that piled up yards at will. Oklahoma recovered and they got real lucky again. Linebacker Edwin Freeman hunted down Westbrook, but he twisted out of the tackle and tumbled into the end zone, putting the Sooners firmly in charge. No Texas team under Charlie Strong had ever given up more.

Baker Mayfield will be back on the grid iron for Saturday's battle with the Longhorns.

"It was really tight there in the beginning", head coach Charlie Strong said. On another long pass to Dahu Green, defensive back Kris Boyd inexplicably stopped running mid-play.

Despite the high-scoring affair, both defenses played better than they had in recent weeks, but it was the Oklahoma rushing attack that netted nearly 300 yards on the ground that ultimately turned this game in the Sooners' favor.

On Friday, Texas athletic director Mike Perrin said there's no magic number that would guarantee Strong a fourth year, but he admitted the defensive issues are "troublesome".

The Texas Longhorns (2-2) lost against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, 49-31, last week. "Just stay on top of your guy'". Tyrone Swoopes had 24 yards and two touchdowns.

Cornerback Kris Boyd thought he heard someone yell "run" on one of Westbrook's three touchdown catches.

Facing a 3rd-and-2 with over three minutes left in the third quarter, Buechele was intercepted by Oklahoma safety Will Sunderland at the 7.

On the defensive side of the ball, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo had a big game for the Sooners with a team-high 11 tackles to go with a forced fumble. Texas, though, gave the football back three plays later. Strong's team had its chance all afternoon as the Sooners piled up turnovers and mistakes. It was the third straight game that the Longhorns have allowed more than 500 yards of total offense. Strong said he expects Foreman to play Saturday. When you put a coach in an impossible situation from the outset, it becomes a pressure cooker in which he has to deliver multiple Herculean feats in a small amount of time.
