Kessler will still most likely start considering he knows much more of head coach Hue Jackson's offense than Whitehurst, but the veteran will provide the Browns with a backup option until McCown returns from his injury. Fellow rookie Corey Coleman exploded on Sunday and could prove to be somewhat quarterback-proof, but this is a major blow to all Cleveland skill-players. This comes after injuries to Week 1 starter Robert Griffin III and backup/Week 2 starter Josh McCown.
McCown was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury, but he insisted after Sunday's loss that he planned to play against the Dolphins.
Kessler will be the Browns' fifth starting quarterback in the team's last five games dating back to previous year, and the 26th quarterback to start for the team since 1999.
Jackson did not provide any specifics about the injury to McCown, who displayed toughness by staying in the game and absorbing several big hits while almost leading the Browns (0-2) to a comeback win. I have two little boys that are playing football now.
On Sunday, Kessler said he was set to take over for McCown if he was asked. The Browns' offensive line has been less than stellar this season, giving up a total of six sacks in two games. In three seasons as the Trojans starter he threw for over 10,000 and 88 touchdowns to just 19 interceptions. "We're going to keep fighting".
Maybe Kessler will show the Browns were smart to draft him in the third round, and will develop into that elusive Browns franchise quarterback.
McCown was injured in the first quarter but didn't come out. "He's probably in the indoor right now tossing the ball around trying to get ready to play so that's just the way he is made". However, by the time the draft rolled around, he was widely viewed as being worthy of one of the first two picks, in part because of the scarcity of top prospects at his position. He could be the fourth rookie quarterback to start in the National Football League in Week 3. Stay ready.' That's all I can do is continue to go with that and prepare this week and continue my process.
"I have to look at the film and find different ways that I can get better in order to help this unit out".
