The Detroit automaker announces an ambitious goal of using only renewable energy in all of its 350 operations in 59 countries globally by 2050.
Oklahoma ranks fourth in the nation in installed wind power capacity, and enough wind projects are set to come online by the end of the year to push the state higher in the nation's wind energy rankings, according to wind power advocates. That's nearly as much as the 1,600 megawatts of power produced by Xcel's two Minnesota nuclear facilities, though they essentially generate power constantly.
Minneapolis-based electricity and natural gas company Xcel Energy is now seeking proposals to significantly grow its wind energy portfolio by adding enough new wind farms to power more than 750,000 homes, bringing up to 1,500 MW of new wind power to Xcel Energy customers.
"We're excited to work with the community in Scurry County and Lincoln Clean Energy to generate 1,000,000 MWh of renewable energy each year from West Texas", said Kara Hurst, director of sustainability with Amazon.
Xcel Energy says it is issuing this RFP now to take full advantage of great wind pricing supported by federal tax credits available for construction of new wind projects.
Clean Line Energy Partners is one of the companies that is building the nation's transmission infrastructure. "Direct purchasing by large, long-term thinking customers like Amazon has quickly become a key driver of the transition to renewable power across the U.S".
Texas now leads the nation in installed wind power capacity, with Iowa coming in second and California third, the Tulsa World reported Monday. The five projects together will generate more than 2.6 million MWh of renewable energy each year, enough to power more than 240,000 US homes.
