Winnipeg man identified as cyclist killed in St. Anne's crash

Students and staff at St. Norbert Collegiate are mourning the loss of a 20-year teacher.

Police have identified the victim as Michael Slobodian, 45.

Police said Slobodian was travelling west on the Perimeter Highway, near St. Anne's Road, when the truck which was also heading west came to a stop at a red light.

Police said the collision happened when the light turned green and the truck made a right-hand turn. Police said that will be determined at the end of the investigation.

In a letter sent home to families of students, principal Chris Szun said Slobodian was a "long-time teacher and a dear friend to our community".

School officials will meet with students on Thursday to share information and any resources they might need to help them, Szun's letter stated.

"The Slobodian family thanks the community for the outpouring of support during this incredibly hard time", the release also stated. He collided with a dump truck on St. Anne's Road near the Perimeter Highway at about 8 a.m.
