Police say they are dating. On the day Victoria Martens was going to celebrate her 10th birthday, she was found dead in her family's apartment by Albuque. The girl's mother and two others are facing charges in the slaying. She went on to say that Kelley had been released from jail just days before her daughter's death and was staying with them.
Minister and family spokeswoman Laura Bobbs says Victoria's family and friends are overwhelmed with grief.
Victoria Martens is seen in a photo obtained by KOAT and distributed through the CNN Wire. The archbishop asked all Catholics to pray for the girl for an end to child abuse. On Wednesday, she was killed in what police described as a "horrific" crime.
Albuquerque Police identified the suspects in her killing as Victoria's mother, Michelle Martens, her mother's boyfriend, Fabian Gonzalez and Gonzales' cousin, Jessica Kelley. All are charged in the girl's death.
On the day the girl was going to celebrate her 10th birthday, she was found dead Wednesday in her family's apartment by Albuquerque police, her dismembered remains lying under a burning blanket.
She was stabbed and strangled to death. The church also offered prayers for the girl's brother, Matthew, and her grandmother.
New Mexico police said they found charred body of a nine-year-old girl who had been defiled, murdered and dismembered in an apartment. That case prompted an overhaul of the New Mexico state agency that investigates child abuse.
She said Gonzales and Kelley then dismembered Victoria. No details were disclosed about why she was hospitalized.
In that case, 31-year-old Fabian Gonzales was arrested for beating another woman in a vehicle with a baby inside it while the woman was driving and ended up pleading no contest to two misdemeanor crimes that kept him out of jail.
In that case, Fabian Gonzales was arrested for beating another woman in a auto with a baby inside it while the woman was driving and ended up pleading no contest to two misdemeanor crimes that kept him out of jail. A judge sentenced him to two years of probation under state supervision.
Second Judicial District Court spokesman Tim Korte says court records show the judgment and probation order were forwarded to the corrections department in February 2015.
Three people including the girl's mother and the mother's boyfriend have been arrested in the killing. He told reporters after his arrest that he didn't have a role in Victoria Martens' death.
Judge Chris J. Schultz says the case is one of the worst he has ever seen.
Other high-profile New Mexico child killing cases include a woman sentenced last year to 21 years in prison for smothering her infant daughter to avoid hearing her cry and a man sentenced to 63 years for raping and killing his baby daughter. According to the complaint, Gonzales said his cousin hit him and Martens with an iron, prompting him to jump over the balcony and run to a neighboring apartment for help.
Martinez called the girl's killers "monsters" and said she hoped "justice will come down on them like a hammer".
Authorities took 31-year-old Jessica Kelley to Albuquerque's Metropolitan Detention Center Friday following her hospitalization for unspecified reasons. She was wrapped in a blanket that had been set on fire.
Police said Martens watched and did nothing to stop Kelley and Gonzales from drugging, raping, and then killing her daughter.
On Thursday, at a court date for Michelle Martens and Fabian Gonzales, bond for each of them was set at $1 million. It's unclear whether Kelley has a lawyer.
