2 buses involved in major crash in New Jersey

Two people are dead and 17 others injured after a commuter bus t-boned another bus in Newark, New Jersey, Friday, authorities said.

Irma Garcia and her husband William Mendez become emotional as they talk about her Irma's mother, Jesy Garcia, who lost her life from the injuries she sustained in the crash of two NJ Transit buses in Newark on August 19. The intersection was closed to traffic and NJ Transit said service in downtown Newark was experiencing delays and detours because of the accident.

Mayor Ras Baraka says seven of the injured were in critical condition. "We are not positive about that, but that is what is being said", he said.

One of the New Jersey Transit buses, No. 13, had just left Newark Penn Station and was traveling northbound on Broad Street with 20 passengers aboard, NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder said.

Bathelus, a 27-year employee of New Jersey Transit, was killed in the crash.

A bus driver died after two buses collided at North Broad Street and Raymond Boulevard in Newark Friday morning.

TV images show one of the buses tipped at a 45-degree angle and heavily damaged.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by today's awful tragedy", U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr., who represents the district that includes Newark, said in a statement.

The National Transportation Safety Board will not investigate the crash, as claimed by a spokesperson.

Rescue workers used ladders to get passengers out of the bus, carefully lifting stretchers thorough broken windows.

The mayor would not comment on reports that Barthelus, who was driving an empty bus, sped through the intersection against a red light.
